Play in a real band
Heavy Chemistry is designed for adult music lovers looking to meet other musicians to make and play music with. Each band is led by a Loudlands instructor who will help you learn to play together, guide you on setlist choices, and work with you on song arrangements and performance preparation. It’s never too late to join a band and build a thriving music community.

Build chemistry
We’ll teach you the fundamentals of playing music and performing with others. Improve your listening, build expressiveness, amplify your stage presence, get comfortable with improvisation, and learn to play solos.

Hone your set
We’ll provide a starting song list and work with your band to source the songs you love. Then it’s practice, practice, practice.

Perform live
Heavy Chemistry includes live performances for the Loudlands community at local studios and venues. Tear up the stage and celebrate all your hard work.

Let’s start
A Band
Build a custom setlist
Each band creates their own unique setlist of 5+ songs with the guidance of a Loudlands instructor.
Some experience required
All band participants are required to have at least a few months experience playing their instrument to qualify.
We’ll handle the gear
We’ve got the drums, keys, amps, mics, and cables to get you playing. Guitars and basses not provided.
All sheet music provided
We’ll give you the charts for free to keep things simple and help you build your setlist.
Name your band
Naming the band is almost as fun as playing the music. Some of our alumni bands include The Alley Rats, The Studio 52’s, and TABLE SAW.
Weekly rehearsals
Band practice meets weekly for 90-minutes to keep you building progress.

All band members meet for weekly 90-minute rehearsals at our studio in Allston. These are led by a Loudlands instructor who functions as your band’s teacher and music director.
Your instructor helps guide song list and set creation, they lead rehearsals, teach you how to be a strong and solid band, and get you show ready for your gigs.
Meanwhile, our team works to book gigs at real Boston venues so your band can perform 4-times per year.
Some students choose to also take two private lessons per month in addition to their rehearsals. This is what our Plus plan is for.

If you’re a hobbyist musician who has either:
Never played in a band before, or
Played in bands but are tired of managing a band and just want to make music and perform live
Then Heavy Chemistry is an amazing fit for you.
We are looking for passionate musicians who want to learn, collaborate with others, and be a part of a community and scene of other bands and musicians.
Most of our students are working professionals over 25 years old. If you’re an active college student this may not be the best fit for you.

Step 1: All of our band members start off by booking a phone consultation with a member of our team.
Step 2: From there, each student comes to our studio for a skill assessment with a Loudlands instructor so we can determine who else to pair with you into a band.
Step 3: Our team then works to build a band based on your musical experience, genre interests, schedule, and personality.
Once we find your band, we then enroll you into Heavy Chemistry.

Absolutely. No one is too old or too young to start. As long as you have a sense of purpose and enjoy the work that goes into playing music, it will be worth it. Downtime, relaxation, and going out to eat are amazing, but if you find yourself thinking about music while on the couch or at a restaurant, why not spend that time in a room with friends making music?

Yes, playing music live with others is the best way to improve on your instrument. As a beginner, think about the role you can play within a band and own it. With time and experience, that role will naturally expand, and you’ll find yourself developing at a much faster rate than if you chose to play at home alone.

One of the best ways to join a band in your area is to attend their shows. Check out their music and performances, and try to connect with them personally. Think about the band’s sound and how you can contribute to it. Do you play guitar? Consider the role of the current guitar player(s) in the band and bring that up in conversation with them.
Another way to get involved is by using channels to market yourself. One effective approach is to use social media to showcase your playing and express your interest in joining bands. Before the rise of social media, people often posted flyers to let others in their area know they were looking to play with others. While this boots-on-the-ground approach may seem time-consuming and somewhat outdated, it still works and is widely used by many in the Boston area.
But, truth is, organizing a band can take a lot of work and often requires a network of musicians. With Heavy Chemistry, we make the process of joining a band easy by finding other musicians like you to play together and music directing the entire experience. That way, all you have to focus on is playing!
