Gabe Kuchan

What do you teach at Loudlands?

Guitar, Bass, and Heavy Chemistry

When did you start playing?

I started playing guitar at 10 years old, and started playing bass shortly after.

What's your favorite aspect of music or your instrument?

My favorite aspect of music is watching the collaborative environment between musicians, and how it can affect both those playing and observing equally. On the guitar, it has to be the limitless possibilities of the instrument. In my opinion, no other instrument has the creative potential quite like the guitar.

Who are some of your favorite bands/musicians and why?

Some of my favorite bands and musicians include musicians from various styles. Some of my favorite artists include D'Angelo, Isaiah Sharkey, John Mayer, Derek Trucks, and Peter Gabriel. All of these musicians make music that speaks to me both as a music fan and a musician equally.

What are some of your current and/or past music projects?

I have an ongoing artist career and have been releasing music under my name for a couple of years. Recently, I have taken on numerous guitar gigs, rotating between two consistent bands that I play in across Boston: "One Mann Band" and "Pat Kennedy Band". My last music release was in January of this year, and I plan to work on recording a large amount of new music that I have written this year.

How would you describe your music and playing style?

I would describe my styles as a mix of Blues, Rock, and R&B with some jazz influences as well. I get a lot of inspiration from singers and slide guitar players, and I really enjoy the process of combining that with more traditional R&B, blues, and jazz techniques.

Can you please describe your gear of choice?

Either a Fender Telecaster or a Gibson ES-335 plugged directly into an unreasonably loud Fender amp.

Any general advice you'd like to give to beginner musicians or someone looking to get started?

Remembering why you got into it every time you get discouraged. That feeling of discovery and growth is worth it, even if it feels like it's rolling at a slow pace sometimes. It won't always be easy, but it will always be rewarding.

Aside from playing/making music, what are some of your other interests and hobbies?

I really enjoy being outside and in nature, as well as playing basketball. I also love to cook when I feel inspired to do so. Also a big fan of a dense video game or TV show to get fully lost in for an afternoon.

If you were battling a physically identical but evil android version of yourself on top of a skyscraper during a thunderstorm and someone miraculously intervened, how would they know which one was the real you?

The robot would be able to see without glasses probably.
