Andrew Choi

What do you teach at Loudlands?

Voice, Guitar, Bands

When did you start playing?

Since I was 13!

What's your favorite aspect of music or your instrument?

The human voice is the most incredible and irreplaceable instrument. Everyone's voice is unique, and each voice tells a unique story.

Who are some of your favorite bands/musicians and why?

I have a lot of influences. As a composer, I have been really enjoying the music of Claude Debussy, Piero Piccioni, and John Williams. As a singer, I really enjoy the music of D'Angelo and Frank Sinatra.

What are some of your current and/or past music projects?

I make music as Iasu, with a blend of rock and neo-soul. I've also composed for a few short films and video games. I'm working on doing more.

How would you describe your music and playing style?

Art is a reflection of the artist, so I try to make my music substantive and playful. My compositions are riff oriented and fun to play.

Can you please describe your gear of choice?

The Shure SM58 is a tank! You could run it over with a truck and put it through the washer, and it would still perform. Its tone is universal. My guitar of choice is the Fender Stratocaster with a floating tremolo.

Any general advice you'd like to give to beginner musicians or someone looking to get started?

Always be curious! You can learn anything from anyone. Don't judge the information and the person you are learning from.

Aside from playing/making music, what are some of your other interests and hobbies?

I also work as a photographer.

If you were battling a physically identical but evil android version of yourself on top of a skyscraper during a thunderstorm and someone miraculously intervened, how would they know which one was the real you?

I've got the gift of gab, and I resolve conflicts all the time. By the time someone came to intervene, I'll probably have made friends with my evil android version, and we'd be on our way to a pub to hang out.
