Travis Rowland
What do you teach at Loudlands?
Drums
When did you start playing?
2007
What's your favorite aspect of music or your instrument?
All genres have a rhythmic center, which you can use to communicate to others.
Who are some of your favorite bands/musicians and why?
Drummers like Questlove, Dave Grohl, and Jojo Mayer really inspired me at an early age. They are also historians of some of my favorite music. Currently I admire drummers like Jharis Yokley, Roni Kaspi, and Chris Coleman for continuing to push the boundaries of what kind of music we can create from our instrument.
What are some of your current and/or past music projects?
I've recorded tracks and EP's with Harrison Fjord (Presents), Tati Crespo (Self Titled), Vashawn Arora (This is Jam Music) Remi Goode (Punchline), and Grupo BombAZo (Remigo Tombe). Currently I perform with Jinxland and Ruby Grove here in Boston.
How would you describe your music and playing style?
A mix of Rock, Hip-Hop, South American and Caribbean grooves at heart, influenced by improvisation.
Can you please describe your gear of choice?
I currently play Gretsch drums and Zildjian cymbals.
Any general advice you'd like to give to beginner musicians or someone looking to get started?
Find the music that inspires you. Listen, watch, or even read along. That inspiration is how your music comes to life.
Aside from playing/making music, what are some of your other interests and hobbies?
I love hiking, reading, basketball, and history.
If you were battling a physically identical but evil android version of yourself on top of a skyscraper during a thunderstorm and someone miraculously intervened, how would they know which one was the real you?
I would eventually need to seek the closest coffee shop.
