Dimitris Terpizis
What do you teach at Loudlands?
Drums, Ensembles
When did you start singing and producing music?
I’ve been playing since I was 4!
What's your favorite aspect of music or your instrument?
I love that drumming is both foundational and expressive. We make people move by creating the groove, but we also ‘paint'. We shape the music through sound, texture, and dynamics. In more contemporary styles, it becomes very cinematic, where even without a steady groove, you can completely transform the mood and direction of the music.
Who are some of your favorite bands/musicians and why?
I’m really inspired by artists like Aaron Parks, Shai Maestro, Chris Potter, Immanuel Wilkins, Mark Guiliana, Antonio Sánchez, Darcy James Argue, Hamilton de Holanda, Nubiyan Twist, and Robert Glasper. They all have a unique sound, a strong sense of storytelling, and are constantly evolving and pushing boundaries. Outside of that, I’m also a big fan of electronic styles like jungle, techno, and drum & bass. I love playing everything from funk and fusion to pop, rock, and various traditional styles, with African and Brazilian music holding a special place in my heart!
What are some of your current and/or past music projects?
My modern jazz Quartet is my main band-leading project with releases and shows across Europe and the U.S. I play in various small and big ensembles and record a lot of different projects! I am part of Orchestravian (modern jazz big band with electronic music grooves), former member of the Fringe Orchestra, Swing Design big band. I also perform with Grooversity and many more!
How would you describe your music and playing style?
Versatile, dynamic, fun, authentic, groovy, explorative, colorful!
Can you please describe your gear of choice?
I typically play Yamaha or Gretsch bop kits and I love Canopus too! My setup lately includes a secondary micro snare, one rack tom, and one or two floor toms. I love 18” or 20” bass drums and I prefer coated heads for their warmth and versatility. I currently use Soultone cymbals, including a custom prototype that’s become one of my favorite crash-ride sounds. I’m also a big fan of incorporating bells, stack combinations, and various percussive textures to expand the sonic palette and create unique colors. Barrel tip is my favorite stick tip!
Any general advice you'd like to give to beginner musicians or someone looking to get started?
Always have fun! Remember, we can’t run before we learn to walk, everything takes time, trust, and patience. Don’t compare yourself to others, everyone is on their own unique journey. You’ve got this!
Aside from playing/making music, what are some of your other interests and hobbies?
I am learning how to code and I actually have a playable version of my own multiplayer FPS game! I really enjoy cooking, dancing, traveling and honestly, exploring what this world has to offer. Every now and then I go on an adventure in previously unknown fields!
If you were battling a physically identical but evil android version of yourself on top of a skyscraper during a thunderstorm and someone miraculously intervened, how would they know which one was the real you?
I can make the perfect Tzatziki dip, that android doesn't stand a chance!
